Pickleball's History in Columbus

Pickleball is growing incredibly fast and Columbus is at the forefront. There are already two permanent pickleball venues in the region with Pickle & Chill near Ohio State’s campus and Pickle Shack on the north side of the city. A third – Real Dill Pickleball – is opening at Polaris in fall 2023.

  • Columbus Recreation & Parks has 118 pickleball courts (58 outdoor and 60 indoor)

  • MLP Columbus in 2022 set a record for the largest prize purse in pro pickleball history, with the winning team taking home $100,000.

  • Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekäläinen is an avid player and did the first NHL and MLP jersey swap in history with members of BLQK.

  • Pickleballuniversity.com called Columbus a “hot spot” for the sport and had Ohio on its top ten list of states to play in.

 

Local Teams

MLP’s locally-owned team features Milan Rane, Becky Ryan, Yates Johnson and CJ Klinger. A good mix of studs and up-and-comers.

David Kass

The former tennis pro owns Pickle & Chill, MLP team "The Bus" and was an early investor in the league.

Joan Pritchard

Married to one pickleball’s inventors, the Marietta, Ohio native is credited with naming the sport.

Doug Ulman

The Pelotonia CEO is on the Major League Pickleball board and co-owns “The Bus” team with David Kass.

CJ Klinger

CJ is the top-rated junior singles player and the top-rated player in the Great Lakes Region (MI, IN, OH) on DUPR as of November 2022…
