Major Annual Races You Should Know
Running has a long history in Columbus, and the city hosts several annual races. High‑profile races in Columbus include October’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & Half Marathon, April’s OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon and June’s Columbus 10K.
Other major, high-participant events include the Ohio State 4 Miler in April, the Fore Miler in May and several Turkey Trots during Thanksgiving week.
Where the Courses Take You
Though each race has its own distinct route, downtown Columbus is relatively flat with minimal elevation changes. These athlete-friendly races give runners the chance to travel through scenic neighborhoods and diverse scenery.
Both the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon and the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon take runners through downtown Columbus and into adjacent neighborhoods, including the Arena District, Short North, German Village, and the University District, while the Columbus 10K is a 6.2-mile tour of downtown Columbus.
For fans of Ohio State Football, the Ohio State 4 Miler finishes on the 50-yard line at Ohio Stadium and the Columbus Turkey Trot turns around in front of Ohio Stadium. The courses of the Franklinton 10 Miler and the Arnold 5K take runners along the banks of the Scioto River.

No matter what race you’re running, race day is filled with high-energy pre- and post-race celebrations. Each race provides recommended viewing locations and special events to encourage runners. Race day celebrations include Cheer Stations, Spectator Zones, live DJ's, and musical performances.
The Cap City Half & Quarter Marathon provides sign-making zones to help spectators cheer on runners and over 30 bands providing entertainment along the course. The race finishes with the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and PNC Post Race Concert at Columbus Commons. This celebration includes pizza, drinks, and live music.
Along the course of the Columbus Marathon, Nationwide Children's Hospital patients and their families will be along every mile of the course to cheer on runners, providing a visual reminder of the cause.
Best Spots for Spectators
Attendees can cheer on runners in downtown Columbus and at spectator zones throughout the charming, nearby neighborhoods.
Recommended on-course viewing locations for the Cap City Half Marathon include Fourth Street at Broad St. or Rich St., the corner of High and Vine Streets, Frankfurt and Third St. in German Village and at High and Long Streets, a short walk from the Start and Finish Line.
Fans of the Columbus Marathon can watch at Nationwide Children's Hospital, where runners will run past two sides of the hospital, Schiller Park in German Village, Goodale Park in Victorian Village or at Celebration Village at North Bank Park.
