The cold weather doesn't slow down Columbus sports. Between the holiday break and the new year, the city hosts several events that give young athletes a chance to compete and families a reason to stay active indoors.
 

Ongoing Through Winter: College Basketball

Ohio State basketball keeps the Schottenstein Center busy throughout the season. The Buckeyes men's and women's teams host Big Ten opponents through early March, with home games offering families a chance to watch Division I competition.

December and January feature conference matchups as both programs push through their schedules. Check the Columbus Sports Commission calendar for the latest schedule updates.

Don’t forget other university basketball divisions! The Rike Center is home to Otterbein University’s basketball teams, and is a great place to see up-and-coming talent from the men’s and women’s divisions. 
 

January 11 and Beyond: Columbus Fury Professional Volleyball

The Columbus Fury kick off their Pro Volleyball Federation season with a home opener at Nationwide Arena on January 10. The team plays through early May, giving families multiple chances to watch professional women's volleyball throughout the winter months.

Throughout Winter and into Spring: Columbus Hockey Action

Winter is unquestionably hockey season! The Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL offer regular fixtures at Nationwide Arena during December (and through April). If college hockey is your thing, don’t miss heavyweights ​​Ohio State Men's Hockey vs. Michigan State as they battle it out in the Schottenstein Center, January 9 and 10, 2026.

The OSU Women’s Ice Hockey team also has regular fixtures throughout the winter, playing home games at the OSU Ice Rink.

The OHSAA Boys State Championship returns to Nationwide Arena March 14-15.
