For 614 Day*, we worked with sports designer, writer and historian Todd Radom for a Twitter Takeover. Throughout the day, Todd shared old logos, photos and other content from the long history of sports in Columbus. Here's a recap in case you missed it live.
How did the Columbus Crew get their name and what did the team look like when they kicked off for the first time?
On June 15, 1994, Columbus was awarded a Major League Soccer franchise, one of the 10 founding members of MLS. A contest to name the team was won by Luis Orozco of Dublin, who submitted “Crew,” beating out Explorers, Falcons, Kickers, and Pride. #614Day @ToddRadom @ColumbusCrew pic.twitter.com/BM4SbPZgDI

The Blue Jackets were the first team to call downtown Columbus home.
Our @BlueJacketsNHL played their first regular season game on October 7, 2000. Their original logo was introduced on November 11, 1997—it featured Stinger, an “insect with attitude.” #614Day @ToddRadom pic.twitter.com/fD14OcsNlA

Did you know Columbus had a women's tackle football team nearly 50 years ago?
The Columbus Pacesetters, a professional women’s tackle football team, played in the National Women’s Football League (NWFL) from 1974-88. A significant milestone in women’s sports history was attained in 1977, when team members purchased the franchise. #614Day @ToddRadom pic.twitter.com/c0Fv933XBV

And Columbus played in the first ever NFL game? Unfortunately the Panhandles lost to the Dayton Triangles.
The Columbus Panhandles played in the first-ever NFL game, a 14-0 loss at Dayton, on October 3, 1920. The team, formed in 1901, originally featured men who worked on the Panhandle section of the Pennsylvania Railroad. #614Day @ToddRadom pic.twitter.com/fm9CKjlvmW
