Tournament will be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center July 1-8
COLUMBUS (June 19, 2017) – The USA Volleyball (USAV) Boys’ Junior National Championships (BJNCs) will return to Columbus and the newly renovated and expanded SMG-managed Greater Columbus Convention Center July 1-8. This year, USA Volleyball will host its largest-ever BJNC with a record 510 teams and more than 5,000 top boys’ junior players from the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam, ages 12-18, participating.
The BJNCs were first held in Columbus just two years ago, and after one of USAV’s most successful tournaments, were awarded again to the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and the Ohio Valley Region (OVR) of USA Volleyball, for this summer. In 2015, the tournament generated nearly $13 million in visitor spending, with more than 22,000 hotel room nights and more than 40 hotels in use by 470 teams and 5,000 players, along with 10,000 spectators, all visiting the city for eight days.
“Columbus is a great partner and has become a favorite destination for the Boys’ Junior National Championships, said Barbara Eisenbeis, events manager for USA Volleyball. “The BJNCs have consistently grown in attendance due to Columbus’ location and ease of access. We have broken our attendance record with 510 teams in 2017. We are very excited to be back in Columbus and know the event will be a huge success.”
“As the Volleyball Capital of the Midwest, we are thrilled to once again host a record number of teams at the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championship,” said Greater Columbus Sports Commission Executive Director Linda Shetina Logan. “We are proud of our partnership with USA Volleyball and look forward to hosting many more events in the years to come.”
“We are very excited about hosting this spectacular tournament again and adding to our legacy of successful volleyball tournaments in our facility,” said Greater Columbus Convention Center General Manager John R. Page. “As one of the volleyball capitals of the U.S., we look forward to having the BJNC as one of the first groups to experience our fully expanded and renovated convention center as we continue to create memorable experiences for their athletes and fans.”
Tickets can be purchased at the door and are also available in advance here. The event will have Open Division titles in each age group from 14 to 18, while offering club titles for each age from 12 to 18. The tournament will showcase talent from all over the country and represents one of the best chances for college recruiters to find potential players for their programs.
The Greater Columbus Convention Center’s $140 million expansion and accompanying full interior renovation includes the addition of nearly 37,000 square feet to the existing 410,000 square feet of exhibit space (373,000 square feet of contiguous space), more than 10,000 square feet of two-level meeting space and exterior renovation and accompanying amenities to enhance the guest experience.
