The Ohio Tournament of Champions, billed as the largest one-day wrestling tournament in the world is set to return to Columbus Saturday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
The event, which has been named America’s number one youth tournament, features seven divisions, each of which have separate weight classes. Six divisions exist for wrestlers of high-school age and below while an open division exists for post-high school wrestlers. Participants include wrestlers from as far away as Vermont, Georgia and Florida.
Three OHSAA state championships will be competing in Columbus this weekend, including: Wrestling, Gymnastics and Boys and Girls Bowling.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) will celebrate the 76th Annual State Individual Wrestling Championships in March, but February will start a new tradition—the OHSAA State Team Tournament.
The first-ever team championship will feature schools from all three divisions and will span over two weeks and culminate with the state finals Feb. 9 at St. John Arena on the campus of The Ohio State University. Each round pairs two schools, which were seeded prior to the tournament, in a dual-like setting with the winner advancing.
The Ohio Regional Training Center cordially invites you to the Central Ohio Spring Fundraiser. The Ohio Regional Training Center has a goal of supporting 7 Olympic Hopefuls (one in each weight category) in the sport of wrestling at the 2012 Olympic Trials. Additionally, our organization provides world-class training opportunities for elite developmental athletes in the area, along with a very strong and consistent community service initiative. We are a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization that exists in Columbus, Ohio to fuel the Olympic Dream.

According to Cleveland.com’s Tim Warsinskey, who is a standout reporter on wrestling, Google, at some point during last Friday (March 4th) had “OHSAA Wrestling” as the No. 20 most-searched phrase in the world (look for “Google this” down some in the article).
This is just another example of how much of a wrestling hot-bed Columbus is. The Ohio High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Championships at the Jerome Schottenstein Center annually draws record crowds to the 19,200-seat arena.

Half of our GCSC Team made the trip to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to present to USA Wrestling on behalf of Columbus hosting the 2012 Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling. It was an adventure!
It took over 12 hours for our group to get there. We were supposed to fly from Houston to Colorado Springs, but ended up stopping in Memphis, because of strong winds, to refuel and that made us miss our flight from Houston. We ended up flying from Houston to Denver and then rented a van to complete the journey to the USOC Training Center.

Columbus has been named one of three finalists for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling & Weightlifting Trials! Joining Columbus are Council Bluffs, Iowa and Iowa City, Iowa. The Greater Columbus Sports Commission is proud to be named a finalist and we really feel strongly about our bid being the most competitive because of the city’s wrestling and weightlifting heritage, our first-class facilities and the support we’ve been able to garner. We will get the chance to showcase Columbus’ “strong match” with wrestling and weightlifting and we also feel that there are some ways to make our bid even stronger when we go to Colorado Springs in January to present to the United States Olympic Committee.
Columbus’ wrestling heritage includes, going way back, hosting the 1967 U.S. Senior National AAU Weightlifting Championships and the 1970 World Weightlifting Championships. Fast forwarding, in 2008, the National Weightlifting Championships were held in Columbus in conjunction with the Arnold Weightlifting Championships as a qualifying event for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Weightlifting.
Columbus is proud to be one of seven cities that bid on the 2012 Olympic Trials for Wrestling & Weightlifting along with Council Bluffs (IA), Greensboro (NC), Hampton (VA), Iowa City (IA), Oklahoma City (OK) and Pontiac (MI). We are excited to potentially host this event in partnership with the 19,700-seat Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center with target date for the event being the weekend of April 20-21, 2012.
