Join us in supporting Olympic Hopefuls training right here in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio Regional Training Center
Oct 18The Greater Columbus Sports Commission aggressively went after the 2012 Olympic Team Wrestling Trials and with the help of many, including Ohio Regional Training Center (RTC) Director Tommy Rowlands, was named a finalist. Unfortunately, Columbus will not be hosting the event in 2012 but we still are very much in support of our Olympic hopefuls training right here in Columbus at the Ohio RTC.
Recently, Henry Cejundo, 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, and Angel Escobedo, 2010 University World Team Member, became members of already stellar team training at the Center.

Google: High School Wrestling in Ohio World “Re-Known”
Mar 07According to Cleveland.com’s Tim Warsinskey, who is a standout reporter on wrestling, Google, at some point during last Friday (March 4th) had “OHSAA Wrestling” as the No. 20 most-searched phrase in the world (look for “Google this” down some in the article).
This is just another example of how much of a wrestling hot-bed Columbus is. The Ohio High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Championships at the Jerome Schottenstein Center annually draws record crowds to the 19,200-seat arena.

GCSC Trip to USOC Training Center in Colorado Springs
Jan 14Half of our GCSC Team made the trip to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. to present to USA Wrestling on behalf of Columbus hosting the 2012 Olympic Team Trials for Wrestling. It was an adventure!
It took over 12 hours for our group to get there. We were supposed to fly from Houston to Colorado Springs, but ended up stopping in Memphis, because of strong winds, to refuel and that made us miss our flight from Houston. We ended up flying from Houston to Denver and then rented a van to complete the journey to the USOC Training Center.

Columbus Named Finalist for 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling & Weightlifting Trials
Dec 22Columbus has been named one of three finalists for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling & Weightlifting Trials! Joining Columbus are Council Bluffs, Iowa and Iowa City, Iowa. The Greater Columbus Sports Commission is proud to be named a finalist and we really feel strongly about our bid being the most competitive because of the city’s wrestling and weightlifting heritage, our first-class facilities and the support we’ve been able to garner. We will get the chance to showcase Columbus’ “strong match” with wrestling and weightlifting and we also feel that there are some ways to make our bid even stronger when we go to Colorado Springs in January to present to the United States Olympic Committee.
Columbus’ wrestling heritage includes, going way back, hosting the 1967 U.S. Senior National AAU Weightlifting Championships and the 1970 World Weightlifting Championships. Fast forwarding, in 2008, the National Weightlifting Championships were held in Columbus in conjunction with the Arnold Weightlifting Championships as a qualifying event for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Weightlifting.
