There’s the distinctive “scraping, swooshing” sound a pair of skates make as a player pivots and rushes up ice; the sharp “clack” of a wooden stick slapping a vulcanized rubber puck; and the soft “pffft” the puck makes when it comes to an abrupt stop inside a goalie’s glove.

Columbus Blue Jackets 2013 Opening Night

Buckeye Cup Club Hockey Classic Lights Up Franklin County

The weekend of March 9-11, 2012, twelve high school club hockey teams from Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus will compete for the Buckeye Cup Championship at the Ohio Health Ice Haus and Chiller North. The Cup, the Holy Grail among Ohio’s three highly competitive prep club leagues, annually draws outstanding individual talent as well as spirited team play well worth watching.

While the defending champion Northeast Storm out of Columbus’ GCHSCHL ranks will return to compete for the Cup, three other strong contenders from the league will take their run at keeping the hardware in Franklin County. The top-seeded and top-ranked Hilliard Wildcats, winners of their first-ever regular season championship lead the charge along with the Bluejacket Cup champion and second ranked and seeded Newark Generals, the Westerville Warcats, and Storm.

Tickets start at only $26.00! Everyone gets a CBJ hat and you can enter a raffle to be 1 of 10 people who will be watching the CBJ as they warm-up while sitting on their bench! A great game which benefits a great cause!

A portion of the ticket sales proceeds will go to support efforts to bring the amazing Blessings in a Backpack program to Ohio. The Blessings in a Backpack charity provides elementary school children who are on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home for 38 weekends during the school year. Backpack food includes easy-to-prepare, ready-to-eat foods.

Columbus’ Sports Pride Shows Strength Again

After Columbus, which is known for having some of the country’s best sports fans, gained more national notoriety for being one of the nation’s top household viewership markets for the Super Bowl, the city is showing more of its fan avidity and Columbus Sports Pride for its local teams.  In two recent Dispatch articles, fans have created special sections to enhance the home-court advantage for the Buckeyes men’s basketball team and the home-ice advantage for the Blue Jackets.
