U20s win National Championship (TheCrew.com)
The Columbus Crew Youth Development System was ranked among the Top 10 in Soccer America’s annual Best Boys Clubs rankings recently. The Crew ranked No. 8, jumping 15 spots from No. 23 in 2009. Only the Chicago Fire – one spot ahead at No. 7 – is ranked higher among other MLS clubs. The Crew’s impressive year was highlighted by national championships at both the Under-19 and U20 levels. After Columbus ranked #4 in World Cup viewership, this is one more reason Columbus has become a top-tier soccer market! – LL
Columbus has been named one of three finalists for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling & Weightlifting Trials! Joining Columbus are Council Bluffs, Iowa and Iowa City, Iowa. The Greater Columbus Sports Commission is proud to be named a finalist and we really feel strongly about our bid being the most competitive because of the city’s wrestling and weightlifting heritage, our first-class facilities and the support we’ve been able to garner. We will get the chance to showcase Columbus’ “strong match” with wrestling and weightlifting and we also feel that there are some ways to make our bid even stronger when we go to Colorado Springs in January to present to the United States Olympic Committee.
Columbus’ wrestling heritage includes, going way back, hosting the 1967 U.S. Senior National AAU Weightlifting Championships and the 1970 World Weightlifting Championships. Fast forwarding, in 2008, the National Weightlifting Championships were held in Columbus in conjunction with the Arnold Weightlifting Championships as a qualifying event for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Weightlifting.
The Greater Columbus Sports Commission congratulates GCSC partner Nationwide Insurance on winning the 2010 NASCAR Marketing Achievement Award, given out in earlier December! Nationwide Insurance, which is the official insurance provider of NASCAR and title partner of the sport’s No. 2 national series, was honored with the 2010 NASCAR Marketing Achievement award at the NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Awards held at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino.
“In its third year as a major series sponsor, Nationwide Insurance is successfully executing an ambitious, multifaceted program — consumer programs with advertising and at-track presence; commercial products among teams; and strategic partnerships with other NASCAR sponsors,” said Jim O’Connell, vice president of corporate marketing and international development for NASCAR. “Nationwide is raising the bar for metrics-driven sponsorship, not only in NASCAR but in all of sports.”
Did You Know that Columbus was a top-ranked television market for the 010 FIFA World Cup? According to the Crew, Columbus ranked 4th in the country this summer in viewership during the World Cup and in addition, Cincinnati ranked 5th. Talk about the city (and state) loving soccer!
That’s great for the Crew going into next season, especially with the news that the team selected forward Jeff Cunningham in Stage 2 of the first-ever MLS Re-Entry Process, meaning that the prolific veteran forward could return to the club with which he spent the first seven seasons of his professional career. The 2009 MLS Golden Boot winner (17 goals) is just two goals shy of becoming Major League Soccer’s all-time goal-scoring king. He will enter 2011 with 132 career goals scored, just one behind all-time leader Jaime Moreno’s 133. The 34-year-old Cunningham remains tied with Brian McBride atop the Crew’s all-time goal-scoring list, having tallied 62 times in Black & Gold.
The Big Ten Conference announced its new division names (Legends & Leaders) and its new logo on December 13th. It has definitely caused some strong fan reaction, which is only good for interest in the conference going into the 2011-12 season.
Having worked for the Big 8 Conference years ago, I am one of those people that are really excited about the addition of Nebraska. Their long-standing traditions will fit in so well with the Big Ten and they will be an immediate boost to the conference in athletics across the board. While most are ready for the cross-divisional football game between Ohio State and Nebraska, I can’t wait for the first women’s volleyball matchup in Columbus. Nebraska is perennial ranked in the Top 5 and now Ohio State has arrived in that upper echelon with its program. It would be a good matchup! – LL

Congratulations to Bishop Watterson High School and Bishop Hartley High School in this year’s Ohio High School Athletic Association State Football Tournament for winning the Division III and Division IV championships, respectively, held in Massillon and Canton over the weekend. In addition to becoming State Champions, the schools made more history in becoming the first ever Franklin County and in particular, Columbus schools, to win championships in the same year!
Women’s soccer in Central Ohio had a tremendous amount of accomplishments in 2010. OSU women’s soccer concluded the season with a 17-5-2 record, tallying the second-most wins in program history and reached the College Cup for the first time. Otterbein made their first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance and Denison made the NCAA quarterfinals. The Pickerington North girls soccer team lost in the OHSAA state final. – LL
Columbus continues to be a great destination for MMA events. Strikeforce, a new MMA promotional company, will bring its first event to the city on March 5 as part of The Arnold Sports Festival. The Greater Columbus Sports Commission looks forward to assisting Strikeforce as part of its continued support of “The Arnold”.
